45 Years in Business: What Ownership, Growth, and Experience Have Taught Me, Contributed By Hani Baskaron Sr.

After more than 45 years of owning, operating, and advising businesses, I’ve learned that success doesn’t come from simply having a good business idea. It comes from understanding your market, managing your people, protecting profitability, and consistently delivering value to your customers.

My career has taken me from owning and operating individual businesses to managing large portfolios of fuel stations and convenience stores, developing wholesale fuel relationships, and advising on business operations and growth strategies.

Along the way, I’ve experienced the opportunities and challenges that come with building organizations, managing financial risk, leading teams, and adapting to changing markets.

From Business Ownership to Large-Scale Operations

Throughout my career, I’ve owned and operated businesses associated with major petroleum brands, including ARCO, Chevron, Unocal, and AM/PM.

At different stages, my business operations included portfolios exceeding 200 fuel and convenience retail locations, with responsibilities spanning financial performance, merchandising, fuel management, maintenance, staffing, and organizational development.

My experience also extended into wholesale fuel supply, including operations associated with approximately 100 million gallons annually, as well as fuel terminals and related supply activities.

Managing businesses at this scale taught me that growth creates both opportunity and complexity.

As organizations expand, maintaining consistent standards, developing capable managers, protecting margins, and responding to changing market conditions become increasingly important.

Growth is important. But growth without financial discipline and operational control can quickly become a liability.

The Lessons That Stayed With Me

Over the years, I’ve worked with businesses at different stages of development, from individual locations to large multi-site organizations.

I’ve learned that successful businesses share several characteristics.

They understand their customers. They know their costs. They develop strong management teams. They maintain dependable supplier relationships. And they recognize that every business decision must ultimately contribute to long-term performance.

I’ve also learned that business owners must remain willing to adapt.

Consumer expectations change. Competition evolves. Markets shift. What worked successfully yesterday may not be enough to compete tomorrow.

That is why I’ve always placed importance on understanding market conditions, evaluating new concepts, improving customer experiences, and identifying opportunities to strengthen performance.

The most successful operators aren’t necessarily those who make the most changes. They’re the ones who understand which changes will create the greatest value.

Sharing Experience Through Keystone Strategic Partners

Following decades of business ownership and operating leadership, I’ve also had opportunities to provide independent consulting services involving petroleum retail operations, marketing strategies, and business performance.

My advisory experience has included projects associated with major fuel brands, helping evaluate business opportunities, develop operating strategies, and implement practical improvements.

Today, I bring that background to Keystone Strategic Partners in an independent Senior Advisor capacity.

I am not part of Keystone’s ownership or executive management. My role is to contribute specialized industry knowledge, operating experience, and perspective when that expertise can support the firm’s advisory work.

I believe there is tremendous value in sharing lessons learned through years of ownership, investment, and hands-on business operations.

Whether a company is considering expansion, evaluating an acquisition, strengthening its management structure, or working to improve profitability, experience can help leadership teams recognize opportunities and avoid costly mistakes.

Experience Creates Perspective. Execution Creates Results.

After more than four decades in business, one belief has remained constant.

A successful business must deliver value to its customers while maintaining the financial discipline, leadership, and operational consistency necessary to remain competitive.

There are no shortcuts to building a strong organization.

It takes commitment, sound decisions, capable people, and a willingness to continuously improve.

Business experience is valuable not simply because of what you’ve accomplished, but because of what you’ve learned—and how those lessons can help others make better decisions.

That’s the perspective I bring to my independent advisory relationship with Keystone Strategic Partners.
